About Us

The Parkinson Council
Serving the Greater Delaware Valley Region

Mission

The Parkinson Council, the chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation serving the greater Delaware Valley, promotes the search for the causes and cure of Parkinson and related neurological disorders, educates patients, their caregivers, healthcare professionals and the general public about Parkinson’s, and improves the quality of life for patients and their families.

Vision

A world without Parkinson disease through research, education and support.

Purpose

The Parkinson Council’s goal is to develop, initiate, manage and support efforts in fundraising, research, advocacy, membership, education and services.

Core Values & Beliefs

The Parkinson Council believes in care, compassionate dedication and integrity for all persons suffering from Parkinson disease and their care-givers, in every community, to be expressed through education, services and funding research.

Core Strategies

The Parkinson Council conducts special events, while simultaneously creating new activities to raise money, increase our donor base and diversify the sources of our funding. These funds are contributed to research, both locally and nationally. We will also continue to fund existing support groups; form new support groups, especially in the underserved communities, while bringing awareness of the disease and the many aspects to the general community through advocacy and education. Remain current or changing health initiatives and modalities that support our members and share that information in a timely and responsible fashion.

2007  Objectives for the Parkinson Council

1. Work with non-profit professionals to write and implement a strategic plan with action steps for the Council that will be an action and goal orientated document that will set the Council’s course for the next 3 years.

2. Create educational events to support our current members and attract new and diverse people to the organization of at least 300 members. Feature support groups on our website.

3. Create a strong committee structure to involve both the Board and the members to keep the support groups, clinical and research engaged with the Council.

4. Implement other fundraising activities, including grant writing, planned giving, annual giving and major sponsorship for our events, to increase our net income.

5. Update our database and process for maintaining, tracking and cultivating donors and prospects.

6. Purchase and install Quick Books Program and consultant for data transfer for more accurate, timely and transparent fiscal reporting. Develop policies and procedures including annual budgets, accounting and expenditure tracking for effective fiscal management.

7. Evaluate and define our relationship with the Center for Excellence at the Pennsylvania Parkinson and Movement Disorder Center and other patient care programs and support groups to provide a stronger and more effective working relationship with them to increase outreach especially to underserved communities. This relationship will also serve to facilitate educational programs for leaders of support groups and increase membership.

8. Foster interaction between the Council and support groups by assigning board members to support groups as a liaison.

9. Increase awareness and visibility by providing a bi-annual newsletter, one annual report, developing a network of spokespeople, submitting ongoing press releases, and seeking opportunities for media coverage. In place is Microsoft Publisher program, which will enable us to set up in house publishing to support these efforts. Purchase Digital camera for efficient and cost-conscious photos for publication, PR and outreach and for use for the support groups.

10. Provide timely information on legislative activities affecting Parkinson through our increased connections with support groups, media contacts and medical centers.
