The 6th Annual Walk for Parkinson started on a gorgeous Spring morning in front of Lloyd Hall, Philadelphia PA.  The walk proceeded down Kelly Drive, at 9 AM, with the sounds of bag pipers leading the way, after a rousing send off by Dave Murphy, weatherman for Channel 6 Action News. Over 500 walkers, joined the Philly Phanactic and Radio Station’s B-101.1 BuzzBee for a 10 mile walk/run. Philadelphia’s Fairmont Park, that encompasses the Kelly Drive, Boat House Row and the gardens behind the Philadelphia Art Museum, were just brilliant with color and spring blossoms and alive with the sounds of friendly voices walking for a great cause.

Months of planning by the Walk committee, lead by David and Suzanne Auten, produced a record breaking $151,000 in donations by sponsors, teams and individuals. This year the response to the walk was quite gratifying and supportive and helped us to move $40,000 pass our goal for this year. Monies raised by the walk with go to research for a cure for Parkinson right here in the Delaware Valley.

The Parkinson Council would like to send their high kudos to all those that helped to make the 2007 Walk the most successful yet.

We can not do this alone but as a combined effort we will find the cure!

Despite the threat of rain and the ominous clouds, the fourth annual Walk for Parkinson’s was a great success! Volunteers and walkers alike gathered at the steps of the Art Museum at 9am. David Murphy of WPVI-TV sounded the starting horn and the walkers were off!

The Walk was held in the City of Philadelphia for the first time. Walkers began to assemble at 8 AM for registration. The walk route was approximately a ten-mile loop with walkers choosing the distance they wished to walk. The rain held off till the walkers returned and all predications are calling for an even greater turnout when Walk for Parkinson’s returns in 2007. Mark your calendars now for April 21, 2007 as the tentative date for the Fifth Annual Walk for Parkinson’s.

Incredible weather greeted volunteers early in the morning of April 16, 2005 as Walk for Parkinson’s 2005 set up began. B101-FM sent Buzz and the B Crew to get the party started with warm up exercises, music and giveaways. The walk began and ended at Lower Perkiomen Park (located just off the Oaks exit of Route 422) with the majority of the walk going through historic Valley Forge Park.

“Parkinson’s is a disease that affects over 1.5 million Americans with 60,000 new cases diagnosed every year. Parkinson’s crosses ethnic lines and is usually diagnosed in men and women over 60, although younger people can be affected,” said Suzanne Auten, co-chair of the walk committee. “My fellow walk organizer, Kevin Peyton, now 39 years old, was diagnosed at the age of 27. While research is getting closer everyday to answering many questions about Parkinson’s, funding is always needed as there is still no known cause, prevention or cure.”

Auten and Peyton selected April 16 as the walk date in recognition of International Parkinson’s Awareness Month held each April. “While the primary goal is to raise funds, it is critical that we continue to generate awareness of Parkinson’s and the resources available locally,” noted Auten.
