NET-PD Creatine Study-NIH Exploratory Trials in Parkinson Disease

General Information

The NET-PD clinical trails group will test creatine, a nutritional supplement to determine if it slow clinical decline in patients with PD.

In this study, 172 men and women were early, treated PD will receive the investigational drug creation or a matching placebo (an inactive substance). Each participant will have a 50% chance of receiving the creatine.

The Drug

Creatine is widely used dietary supplement thoguyt to improve exercise performance.  Creatine has not been approved to treat PD.  In animal models and human studies, creatine has been shown to be well tolerated and may have some ability to protect brain cells.

Some of the known side effects of creatine are weight gain, swelling in the arms or legs, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.  Side effects that are rare include muscle cramps and liver or kidney problems.

Eligibility Criteria

You may be eligible to participate in their study if:

  • You are willing and able to give informed consent and comply with study requirements
  • You have been diagnosed with PD within the last 5 years
  • You are receiving medications to treat your PD ( the study staff will review your medications to determine if you are eligible)

You may not be eligible to participate if:

  • You have used creatine within the 2 weeks before entering the study.
  • You have participated in another drug trial within the month before the start date of the NET-PD study.
  • You have a know sensitivity to creatine
  • The study team does not feel you overall medical condition is such that it would be safe for you to participate.
  • he study team is not confident tat you have a diagnosis of PD

Schedule of Visits

The study will last for a minimum of 5 years; for some participants it may last as long as 7 years.  During the first year of the study you will be seen a minimum of four times. During the second year, you will be seen at least two times.  Thereafter, your will be seen every year for an in –person visit and have a telephone consultation between visits.  It may be necessary for you to have an extra visits if you are having concerns about your PD or if you laboratory test need to be repeated.
