Yoga

As a result of my yoga exercises, I started doing stretching exercises before I get out of bed in the morning, and I feel much, much better. I feel my legs and arms getting much stronger and I have a lot more energy.

Yoga for Parkinsonians

photo of yoga position

During the past 10 years, there has been an increasing interest and development in practices of yoga for Parkinsonians.

Yoga is defined as a practice that makes the body strong and flexible while improving the respiratory circulation, digestive and hormone systems. Yoga practice brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind.  The practice of Yoga dates back 5000 years to India and the word yoga means to unite or integrate. Therefore on a very personal level, yoga would be about the union of an individual with the universal consciousness. In order for a person to be in harmony with his world and self, he has to be able to integrate his mind body and spirit. The expression of yoga is a way of achieving and maintaining balance through exercise, breathing and mediation. Yoga is a practice not a religion.

Yoga is a practical aid, not a religion. Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. The continued practice of yoga will lead you to a sense of peace and well-being, and also a feeling of being at one with their environment. This is a simple definition.

The practice of yoga makes the body strong and flexible; it also improves the functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems. Yoga brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind.

There are many branches of yoga but all have the same strengthening and toning properties.

Four years ago, the Parkinson Council with Panna Flower MRC, CMT started a yoga class in Swarthmore. The class has continued to grow and offers a wonderful series of exercise and sharing.

The Parkinson Council is excited to announce that we are now offering new classes in yoga located in various locations in the Delaware Valley.
